Martyn Irvine has already undergone surgery in Taiwan
By Brian Canty
Recently crowned Track World Champion, Martyn Irvine has broken his hip after crashing during stage four of the Tour of Taiwan today.
The UnitedHealthCare professional was involved in a collision about 50 kilometres into the 159kilometre stage in the city of Taichung in the west of the country when he fell.
Irvine has already undergone surgery and is recovering in hospital.
The incident occurred when the bunch was lined out and the rider ahead of Irvine flicked sideways, giving the Irish man no time to react. He subsequently hit a bollard and was forced to abandon.
Irvine (27) became the first Irishman to win a World Track Championship cycling gold medal in 117 years in Belarus last month. He followed his silver medal in the individual pursuit event by taking gold in the 15km scratch race less than an hour later.
From all at stickybottle we wish him a speedy recovery and return to racing.
