Martin & Roche at Stage 17, Vuelta 2011 – both have nice media deals going on for the Tour de France
Dan Martin is to record his Tour de France debut with a daily diary in The Irish Times. Martin has agreed a deal with the paper, which begins with a preview tomorrow, Saturday, and will be followed by a diary every day for the duration of the three-week race.
His thoughts will appear both in the newspaper and on www.irishtimes.com
Martin has had diary-style pieces in some of the bigger UK cycling magazines in the past few years. But his Tour diary is his first big move into the mainstream media and will undoubtedly raise his profile among the Irish public.
His move into diary writing follows on from the success of Nicolas Roche’s diary in The Irish Independent for a number of years. Roche’s Tour diary has been a major success and has also been extended to include some smaller stage races in recent seasons.
He has also progressed from writing the diary into writing a book – ‘Inside The Peloton’ – with well known cycling journalist Gerard Cromwell.
The book went on to win the ‘Bord Gais Irish Sports Book of the Year’ last year.
Roche’s diary will again be carried every day in the Independent during this year’s Tour.
News that the two Irish riders in the Tour will both have high profile diaries in the two biggest newspapers in the country is great news and should really raise the profile of the sport in Ireland over coming weeks and beyond.
With Roche now in very good form following his 10th place overall in the Tour de Suisse and Martin having already taken a Vuelta stage last year, there’s a very good chance both riders will be writing about stage winning exploits in their diaries over the next three weeks.
Best of luck to both in the coming weeks; and of course we’ll have news of all the Tour action for you on stickybottle.
