Mark Cavendish has signed for WorldTour team Bahrain Merida where he will link up with his former coach Rod Ellingworth, formerly of Team Sky.

Cavendish makes the move from Dimension Data after a troubled time with that team due to illness and injury.

However, in recent days he has been back in good form on the track at the London Six Day and will look to kick start his career with his transfer, which was anticipated.

The deal is for one year meaning the Manxman will be under pressure to deliver results.

“Joining this team is the fulfilment of a long-held ambition for me and is super exciting and motivating. You could even say a dream come true,” Cavendish said.

“I can’t wait to join my new teammates and do everything I can to help us achieve the successes I know will come.”

Ellingworth said he was delighted to sign Cavendish to the team.

“Mark’s signing completes our rider roster for 2020 and gives us the balance the team needs to win,” he said.

“Having last worked with him at the 2016 Rio Olympics and Qatar World Championships, I’ve been delighted to see that his energy and determination to succeed are greater now than ever. We’re going to do everything in our power to enable him to perform at his best.”
