Marc Hirschi has been unveiled as a UAE Team Emirates rider having signed a three-year contract with the team following his release from his Team DSM contract.
“Firstly, I’d like to thank my previous team for everything they’ve done for me over the past three years,” said the 22-year-old Swiss rider.
“I am now happy to be able to say that I am joining UAE Team Emirates. I’m really excited about the move.
“We share the same approach and goals. The UAE team is moving in the right direction and have been growing a lot over the past years. I look forward to benefit from that dynamic, both for the team and the development of my career.
“Now I’ll turn my attention to the training camp and getting to know everybody and settling in. This will be my first time ever visiting the UAE so I look forward to discovering the country.”
The new deal with UAE Team Emirates means Hirschi linking up with Tour de France champion Tadej Pogačar (22) for at least the next three years.
Despite Pogačar winning the Tour last year his team has been
relatively quiet in the transfer market, with Rafal Majka and Matteo
Trentin the only two big name new signings over the winter.
Hirschi (22) rode very well in the Tour de France last year, taking a stage victory and proving unlucky in not winning at least one more stage.
He really came into his own again after the Tour with
bronze in the men’s road race at the Worlds and victory in La Flèche Wallonne.
The Swiss rider looked like he may have won
Liège-Bastogne-Liège but for a significant move in the sprint by Julian
Alaphilippe, who was relegated. That gave the win to Primoz Roglic, with
Hirschi 2nd on the day.
While Hirschi still had a year to run on his contract
with Team DSM, formerly Team Sunweb, the team agreed to release him during the
week.
Media reports in the Netherlands immediately linked him
to UAE Team Emirates, which has now been confirmed.
