Man who pushed female cyclist into path of traffic hands himself into police

The female cyclist's attacker has handed himself into the police after this video was released by the investigating team and went viral.

A man who chased after a cyclist in the street and pushed her into the path of oncoming traffic has handed himself into police.

London’s Metropolitan Police said a 33-year-old man went to Bethnal Green station at lunch time today, Tuesday, and identified himself as the man in the cyclist’s headcam footage, below.

The clip, recorded by the rider as she cycled in the Whitechapel area of London on May 1st, was released by Met officers on Tuesday morning in a bid to progress efforts to find the attacker.

The suspect has not been arrested but has been questioned about the incident.

It was unclear at the time of writing whether he would be criminally prosecuted or cautioned.

In recent cases in the UK when abusive and sometimes violent behaviour has been directed at cyclists and recorded on helmet cameras, those responsible have been dealt with by caution and a fine.

In the latest incident, the cyclist called out to the man “please don’t try and knock me off” as she passed.

The footage shows the woman continuing on her way and the man can be heard shouting and swearing after her, accusing her of using an obscene hand gesture.

He gives chase and quickly catches up with her at a junction just up the road, pushing her into the road apparently in a rage at being told to remain on the pavement.

The woman was not struck by any of the vehicles on the road and while upset by what had taken place she did not need medical treatment.

Instead, she took the footage recorded to the police, with the release of the clip by Met officers resulting in it going viral and prompting the suspect to present himself for questioning within hours.
