The passerby was crossing the course. He seemed to see the riders yet he stepped out. In the clip the lead rider is attacking off the front of the breakaway close to the end of the race as a guy steps right into his part and causes carnage.
Man walks into Leicester Castle Classic Road Race riders
A spectator has walked into a UK road race breakaway and caused carnage. One of the riders in the winning move was attacking off the front at the time as the race neared its close.
And to add insult to injury the rider who came down, George Wood, was on course for a very big result at the time.
The word from Wood’s camp is that his bike was smashed up and he’s suffered whiplash injuries.
Apparently the spectator got up and walked away.
When he was asked to hang around so somebody could take his contact details he said he had to go or he’d be late for work.
Wood was riding the Leicester Castle Classic Road Race last weekend when the incident occurred.
He was in breakaway on the penultimate lap of the circuit race. He had finished higher than 8th he was guaranteed U23 overall victory in the HSBC UK Grand Prix Series.
In the end, he was taken out by the spectator and placed last in the final result.
It meant the amateur rider – who races for Richardsons-Trek Road Team – ran out 3rd U23 overall.
It was won by Connor Swift (Madison Genesis) from Oliver Wood (Team Wiggins) as Swift win last Sunday’s final race.
The clip below appears to show the passerby check the road and notice the approaching moto.
He either didn't see the cyclists and maybe thought they would stop or go around him. He can be seen to the right of the clip holding his head when he gets back to his feet.
