Man Vs Machine: Irish endurance rider to face-off against electric car

Joe Barr goes up against an electric car - a Hyundai IONIQ 5 - this Thursday at a motor racing track in Co Down

Irish endurance rider Joe Barr is set for an unusual race this week when he takes on an electric car in a test of endurance. Both rider and car will see how far they can go on one charge, so to speak.

While the vehicle will eventually run out of its finite amount of power, Barr will ride as hard as he can and see how many miles he can do before the Hyundai IONIQ 5 he’s racing against comes to a halt.

The unusual event is set to take place this Thursday at Bishopscourt
Racing Circuit in Co Down and is being promoted by Team Joe Barr and Daly’s
Garage. The car dealership, which is based on the Falls Road in Belfast, has
been supplying vehicles to Barr and his team for their endurance racing in
recent years.

Barr’s support team has switched to more sustainable cars as their support vehicles. They wanted to pit their man against one of their cars to see how the endurance rider could perform against a single charge in the Hyundai IONIQ 5.

It’s not the first time Irish cycling has seen an unusual
race like this as Nicolas Roche raced a horse and jockey seven years ago.

Riding for Saxo Tinkoff at the time, Roche raced over 400
metres - the final two uphill furlongs of the Leopardstown track in south
Dublin - against champion jockey Pat Smullen on board the Dermot Weld trained
Moonbi Creek.

The event was in aid of the Children’s Medical & Research Foundation at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin and took just over 25 seconds; with the horse winning on the day.
