Man shot after driving his pick-up truck into riders in US State Champs race

Several cyclists have been injured, some of them
critically, after a man in a pick-up truck allegedly drove the vehicle into a
group of riders as they raced the Arizona State Championships.

Police in Show Low, Arizona, responded to the incident
and pursued the driver, later following him on foot to a shop and shooting him.

The injured riders were competing in Bike the Bluff in
Show Low, which doubled as the Arizona road championships, when the driver of a
Ford F-150 hit the group just before 7.30am local time.

Navajo County Emergency Management & Preparedness
issued a statement saying six of the victims were taken to hospital; five by
ambulance and one airlifted from the scene. Four cyclists were in critical
condition and two were stable.

Another two or three victims were also treated at a local
health facility but it appears they were able to make their own way there.

While police on the scene tried to stop the suspect, he
fled and was eventually followed into a hardware shop where he was shot. The
suspect, a 35-year-old man, was in a stable condition in hospital.

 “Our community is
shocked at this incident and our hearts and prayers are with the injured and
their families at this time,” said Kristine Sleighter, a spokesperson for the
local police department.

The cyclists were hit had were riding the Masters State
championships and had only just begun their race when the driver in the pick-up
crashed into the group.
