Man killed after crashing off 'motorised' bike he was cycling in Dublin

Gardaí are investigating after a man was killed when the 'motorised' bicycle he was riding hit a pole in south Dublin last night

A man has died after the 'motorised' bike he was cycling in south Dublin hit a pole, resulting in fatal injuries.

While the man, who was in his 40s, was taken from the scene by ambulance to hospital after the crash last night, he was later pronounced dead.

Investigating gardaí are now appealing for witnesses, including those with video evidence. They also closed off the crash scene for examination.

Gardaí said the "single vehicle fatal road traffic collision" occurred at about 8:30pm last night at Sallymount Avenue, Ranelagh, Dublin 6.

"A man in his 40s was taken to St Vincent's University Hospital in a critical condition when the motorised pedal cycle he was travelling on struck a pole. The male later passed away as a result of his injuries," the Garda statement said.

"The road was closed for a time in order for forensic collision investigators to technically examine the scene but has since re-opened fully. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward."

Any road users who may have camera footage after travelling on the roads from the Baggot Street area to the Sandymount Avenue area between 7:45pm and 8:30pm are being asked to make their footage available to gardaí.
