Gardaí investigating a hit and run that claimed the life of a cyclist have arrested and charged a man in relation to the fatality. The suspect was due to appear before the courts this morning, Thursday.
The victim has been named as Ned McLoughlin (80s), who was a well known figure in Co Meath and remained very active in keeping fit despite this age.
He was killed last Friday morning on the R156, close to Boardsmill National School in Batterstown, Co Meath, at 9.50am. A statement from the Garda last week said the driver of the vehicle failed to remain at the scene.
However, after an investigation, a suspect was arrested for questioning. Gardaí said on Thursday morning a person had been charged in relation to the fatal crash and was due to appear before the courts immediately.
"The man, aged in his 40s, who was arrested in connection with this investigation has been charged," the Garda said. "He is due to appear before Trim District Court this morning, Thursday 18th September 2025, at 10.30am. Investigations are ongoing."
Na Fianna Athletic Club paid tribute to Mr McLoughlin, saying he was a valued and popular member of their club.
"Ned was a member of our club for many years," it said. "He competed as part of our men's senior team at county, provincial and national cross country events throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Ned is remembered by his good friends and training buddies."
A death notice said Mr McLoughlin, from Doolistown, Trim, Co Meath, would be "greatly missed by his loving family, partner Thelma, brothers Larry and Bernard, sisters Liz, Josie and Stella, brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends."
