A man has been arrested and 16 stolen bikes have been seized by gardaí in Dublin after a sting operation prompted when a women saw her stolen bike for sale online and raised the alarm.
When the woman
informed gardaí her bike was
being offered for sale, she contacted the person selling it and organised to meet
them on the pretense of buying the bike.
However, she was
accompanied to the meeting by a garda and when the seller showed up with the
stolen bike, it was taken from him and returned to the woman.
The suspect was
arrested on the spot on Crumlin, Dublin, yesterday at about 5.30pm. Gardai then
searched a house, believed to me the home of the man who was arrested, and they
found 15 bikes and an angle grinder.
“The
operation involved a planned arrangement to meet a seller of a stolen pedal
cycle, which was placed for sale on a
selling site,” the gardai explained in a statement to the media.
“The man
attended the scene with the stolen pedal cycle; the owner of the pedal cycle
identified her pedal cycle and the man was arrested. He was conveyed to Crumlin Garda station where he was detained
under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.”
“The man
has since been charged in relation to the seizure and Gardaí at Crumlin will
endeavour to identify the rightful owners of the pedal cycles in due course. The
items that are not returned to owners will be circulated via media in the
coming weeks.”
