Irish cycling retailer Cycle Superstore has warned its customers of a scam involving a fake website - purporting to be owned by the company. The fake site appears to have been set up to scam people into providing their personal details.
The fake site has effectively hijacked a competition being held online by Cycle Superstore. While the prizes on offer in the competition are worth modest sums - a €199 pair of shoes for 1st place, a €47.99 base layer for 2nd and a €40 Zefal 'hamper' for 3rd - great effort appears to have gone into hijacking the competition.
Dublin-based Cycle Superstore has taken to social media to warn people of the scam site, which offers the same prizes and uses the company's logo and website images. The fake site invites people to enter the competition by inputting their personal details, including a credit card number.
"It has been brought to our attention that there is someone pretending to be us," Cycle Superstore said in a warning message. "They are contacting people to tell them they have won the competition and to click on the link below to fill in their details and provide them with personal data.
"This is not us, we will never ask anyone one for personal details. Please ignore if they contact you," it added.
A number of visitors to the company's Facebook page confirmed they had received a message from whomever is running the fake site encouraging them to enter what was presented as the Cycle Superstore genuine competition.
