Challenge Mallorca, which would have been the first event of the men’s pro racing scene in 2021, has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Racing on the Spanish island of Mallorca had been
scheduled to take place from January 28th to 31th and was a series of one-day
races rather than a stage race.
However, Mallorca was on Tuesday set to enter the highest
level of restrictions in a bid to combat a surge in the virus that has been
witnessed across Europe in recent weeks.
And though those restrictions were due to end of January
26th, two days before Challenge Mallorca was due to start, the organisers have
been forced to pull the plug for now.
It is a huge blow to the European racing scene and comes
as the Tour Down Under and related races for international riders have not been
possible this year, though alternative racing for domestic riders will go ahead.
The Tour de Yorkshire has also been cancelled this year
as have races like the Tour of Antalya in Turkey and Tour Colombia and it is
now feared others will follow, at least at the start of the season.
"We profoundly regret having to take this decision
but the current situation obliges us to enact our responsibility to prioritise
the health of everyone involved in the race," said Unisport’s director
general, Manuel Hernández.
He added the Challenge Mallorca racing may still be held
at a later date, possibly in mid May.
"From today we will put all our efforts into holding
the race in May and being able to give it the celebration it deserves on its
30th anniversary," said Hernández.
