Major blow to Irish road racing scene as Victus Tour of Ulster is "postponed"

The Victus Tour of Ulster, which was due to unfold at the end of this month, has been postponed. The event was finding it tough to get the required number of entries to make it viable this year.

Added to that, other challenges have now emerged related to travel and accommodation and so the organisers have decided to postpone the 2023 edition, meaning it will definitely not run on the final weekend of April into May.

Though the postponement is a big blow to domestic road racing, it is especially bad for racing in Ulster, which has already lost the International Tour of the North. That race has not run in recent seasons and has reduced the number of Easter stage races on the island of Ireland from three to two.

While the organisers of Victus Tour of Ulster have said they were now working with Cycling Ireland in a bid to run the event later this season, those plans are not confirmed and no alternative date has yet been mooted.

"The organisers of the 2023 Victus Tour of Ulster regret to announce that the event has been postponed due to several logistical challenges," the group organising the race said in a brief statement.

"These include issues related to travel, accommodation, and the need for adequate participation in the elite racing category. To ensure the success of the event, it has been deemed necessary to postpone it until a later date in the summer.

"We understand that many of you were looking forward to participating in this event, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused by this decision. We will work closely with Cycling Ireland to find a suitable date in the 2023 season.

"We will keep you informed about the rescheduled date and time. Please keep an eye on our website, www.tourofulster.com for any additional details and updates."

More to come when we have it and we wish the organisers the best in their efforts to run the race later in the season.
