An extraordinary general meeting was held by Cycling Ireland to elect a new member to the board of the national governing body, with Catherine Mahoney securing the position. She went forward for election against former top road rider, turned sports agent, Derry McVeigh.
Mahoney, who won silver in the team pursuit with UCD CC at the National Track Championships in August, now replaces Helen Kerrane, who takes up a new post with Cycling Ireland as she exits the board of directors.
Kerrane was last month announced as the national governing body's 'women in sport lead', saying she was "delighted" to take up the post. She was doing so "in an era where there is so much support for women and girls in sport".
New board member, Mahoney, holds a PhD in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology and an MSc in Statistics from University College Dublin. Cycling Ireland said she had extensive experience in administration and governance.
She has been a member of UCD Cycling Club since 2017 and served as vice president of the UCD Athletic Union Council from 2019 to 2021. Mahoney was also vice president of Student Sport Ireland (SSI) from 2020 to 2023.
As part of her role in SSI she contributed to the formation of the SSI Student Commission and served as the Irish student delegate to the 2022 International University Sports Federation World Forum in Cartago, Costa Rica. Mahoney is also an active road, gravel and track rider.
She said she was delighted to be elected onto the board, saying she has had the "privilege of being involved in riding and racing" over the last six years.
"I look forward to the opportunity to give back to an organisation that means so much to me. Having served as vice president of both the UCD Athletic Union Council and the Board of Student Sport Ireland, I hope to bring my experience and enthusiasm for student cycling and sports governance to Cycling Ireland.”
Cycling Ireland president, Dr Tom Daly, thanked both candidates for putting themselves forward for the position of director on the board.
"We are fortunate to have members with their experience, skills and commitment prepared to volunteer for this important governance role," he said. "I congratulate Catherine on her election and, along with the other board members, I look forward to working with her on the continuing development of our organisation.”
