Magnus Backstedt’s reaction to his daughter, Zoe, winning the world title today has been captured on video, as he was commentating on the race for Eurosport.
Zoe Backstedt (Great Britain) Kaia Schmid (USA) attacked
the remains of the peloton with two laps of the circuit remaining in the junior
women’s road race in Belgium. At the finish they sprinted it out for gold and silver;
Backstedt winning.
Magnus Backstedt, a former pro rider who won a stage of
the Tour de France and also won Paris-Roubaix, was commentating on the race
today before the nerves got to him as his daughter and Schmid passed the 1km
kite.
His co-commentator Marty MacDonald McCrossan took over to
call the final two-up sprint. But the video below shows Magnus Backstedt watching
that sprint and celebrating emotionally.
He celebrated in silence as he was still on air, before
eventually gathering himself and chipped into the commentary again.
“Ooooh, it’s a super proud moment,” Magnus Backstedt said after a very long silence from the 1km to banner until a couple of minutes after the final sprint. “I’ve got tears running down my face commentating on this and watching this… wow.
“What a duo. It clearly came down to whoever had the legs
on that final straight, and who wanted it the most on that final straight as
well.
“Zoe just has that kick that she practices so much and she’s naturally very gifted on it. Just as soon as she lights that up... You can see how much that means to her."
