This video of the incident makes Luke Rowe being disqualified from Tour of Flanders look a bit harsh, to say the least. Have a look and see what you think. He was taken out of the race with 56km remaining.
Video: Team Sky's Luke Rowe disqualified from Flanders
Luke Rowe has been disqualified from the Tour of Flanders for riding on the pavement. He was taken out of the race with just under 60km remaining.
Riders have been repeatedly warned that riding on pavements will not be tolerated.
And at Gent Wevelgem last weekend barriers were used to block off cycle lanes and gravel paths running alongside pave sections.
That was done so the riders could not avoid the cobbles by riding on smooth sections running alongside the roads.
However, the case of Luke Rowe being disqualified at the Tour of Flanders today is no quite as clear cut.
Spectators had come off the footpath and stepped into both the cycle lane and the road.
Rowe was weaving his way around them and very briefly went onto the pavement.
But he was spotted by the cameras on the path just before the second climb of the Oude Kwaremont with 56km remaining.
Have a look at this clip – he’s on the bottom right corner – and see if you agree that his being disqualified was harsh.
