
The cycling group was out on a morning ride when the three cyclists were involved in a collision with a car. Two of them were very seriously injured, leaving their club mates shocked.
Lough Key Triathlon Club shocked at cycling crash
An Irish triathlon club whose riders were badly injured when in collision with a car while cycling has said it was shocked by what had happened.
Three members of the Lough Key Triathlon Club were involved in the incident at Doon, north Roscommon, last weekend.
It is understand a motorist was overtaking the riders when an oncoming vehicle appeared.
The car overtaking was in collision with the cyclists, all women, and left two of them badly injured. Garda arrived and arrested the driver.
The cyclists were taken by ambulances to Sligo General Hospital just before 9.30am on Sunday.
Lough Key Triathlon Club has confirmed the cyclists were its members.
“Everyone in and associated with Lough Key Triathlon Club was left shocked and numb once news broke of the dreadful collision," it said.
"The collision took place between a car and three of our members close to the Rock of Doon near Boyle on a lovely sunny morning last Sunday.
“The three girls set off on a training spin, as most of us do regularly, without a care in the world.
“And only a short time later their lives and that of their families have been changed quite possibly for a long time to come.
“Mothers with young children; this is the last thing any of them were expecting.
"And no words can express the wave of emotion that has filled members since we found out."
The club added it would not comment on the specifics of the crash. But it made an appeal to motorists.
“We ask that all drivers please, please, please remember the frailty of the human body," it said.
“And (drivers should remember) how delicate we all are out there on the road. Whether it be a cyclist, a runner, a walker or indeed another driver.
“We give our very best wishes to Catherine and Aine and also Aoife at this time.
“And hope and pray that you make full and complete recoveries.
"You are all in our thoughts as are your families. Please be safe everyone on the roads out there.”
