An Irish EuroMillions winner who said all he really wanted was a new top of the range bike has spent just shy of €18,000 in a north Co Dublin bike shop.
Last February Gerry Brown’s wife was one of six sisters from the Naul to scoop the €175 million pot in the EuroMillions.
A very down to earth guy, Gerry is retired and has taken
to cycling in a big way with his buddies from the area.
He was put forward by the family at the time of the big
win to do some media interviews.
And when he was asked what he wanted to do with the cash,
he said all he really wanted was “one of the best bikes you can get”.
It may have taken him a while but in recent weeks he has
finally gotten around to buying the bike of his dreams – as well as a training
bike, of course.
His main purchase was a Trek Madone SLR
9 costing just under €14,000. And his new winter hacker is a Trek Domane
SL 5 with a spec that cost just under
€4,000.
When deciding to spend that much money on two bikes, Gerry kept it local and went to the Cycling and Angling store in Balbriggan.
There Sean Landers helped him view all the various options online before they picked the bike they wanted and went about building it.
“We built up the
bike by buying all the components separately, first choice was the Dura Ace Di2
Hydraulic Disc groupset,” said Landers of the Trek Madone SLR 9.
“He chose disc
brakes to enable zero visible cables throughout the bike. And integrated into
the shifting mechanisms is the climbing shifters underneath the handlebars, so
he can change gear from the tops.
“The wheel set is
Zipp 303 NSW made tubeless and are complimented with Continentals GP5000 TL
tyres.
“He sits on a
fi’zi:k Antares R1 carbon tailed saddle and is clipped into Dura Ace pedals
with Trek’s own aero integrated handlebar and stem.”
