Level of effort that went into Ireland's newest cycle lane? Not much

We're all in favour of new cycle lanes - the more the merrier. But this is absolutely bonkers.

Anything that makes cycling easier and safer for the record numbers of cyclist on Irish roads is alright with us. But this latest effort in Kildare leaves a lot to be desired.

One stickybottle reader noticed a crew working late into the night over the weekend around Naas putting in new road markings.

And among their tasks was to mark out new cycle lanes on the public roads, including this one in the Monread area of Naas.

Our reader contacted us saying: "Kildare County Council were really busy in Naas last night, midnight to be precise relining the centre line and the bike lane.

"As you can see from the photo the road is in need of urgent repair. They just painted through the damage.

"What's the point? Even cars drive around this damage and it is completely unsafe for bicycles."

In fairness to those involved, they were very likely given their tasks to do and by the sounds of things they got stuck into that work.

It's just a pity that those who planned the works didn't check on the condition of this stretch of cycle lane to be marked out.

As you can see, the road surface has deteriorated to the extent it's non-existent. And any cyclist using this lane would undoubtedly dip outside of it into the traffic lane to avoid the unsafe surface.

If you're tired of the lack of joined up thinking arond cycling infrastructure, and even the creation of unsafe so-called facilities for cyclists like this one, there's an event in Dublin in coming days you should know about.

The Dublin Cycling Campaign is holding a rally outside Dáil Eireann - leaving from the Department of Transport nearby - to protest at the paltry sums being spent on cycling infrastructure nationwide.

So don't leave it to others to go; be there yourself and make sure your protest is registered. You'll get all the details of the lunchtime event on Wednesday by following this link.
