Gerry Murray is well known in Irish cycling - as a leisure rider and race motorbike marshal - and has been named as the cyclist seriously injured in a crash with a lorry driver

A cyclist in his 60s who was seriously injured in a crash with a lorry driver while he was out training has been named as Gerry Murray, a leisure rider who has also worked as a motorbike marshal at Irish and international bike races.

Mr Murray, whose son is Irish rugby international Conor Murray, was taken by ambulance from the crash scene to University Hospital Limerick. However, he has since been transferred to Cork University Hospital for specialist treatment due to serious head injuries.

He was cycling on the N20 near Patrickswell, Co Limerick, on Tuesday when he was involved in the crash with the truck driver. The Irish Independent reports the road where the crash happened was closed for about 90 minutes as Mr Murray was treated at the scene and then taken into the ambulance.

"Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a traffic collision that occurred at approximately 3:25pm on Tuesday, the 7th February 2023 on the N20 in Patrickswell, Co Limerick," a Garda statement said of Mr Murray's crash on Tuesday.
