Cyclist killed was popular principal at Dublin school

 

The latest cyclist killed on the roads has been named as Pádraic Carney, a popular and well-respected Dublin primary school principal.

His was the 10th cycling fatality on the roads of the Republic so far this year, compared with 10 in all of 2016.

The 53-year-old was fatally injured when in collission with a motorist driving a car in Rathfarnham, south Dublin, on Monday morning.

He was taken to hospital but his death from his injuries was announced early this morning.

The collision that took Mr Carney’s life occurred in the Butterfield housing estate just after 8am.

He was on his way to work at St Louis Senior Primary School, Rathmines, when he was struck by a motorist at the junction of Butterfield Park and Butterfield Crescent.

A number of people were in the area at the time and rushed to his aid. Mr Carney was taken by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital but later died.

Staff at his school said they were devastated. Counselling has been offered to the children there, who are aged between 8 and 12 years.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic death of our much loved and widely respected principal teacher, Pádraic Carney, following a road traffic accident yesterday morning on his way to school,” the school said in a statement earlier today.

“This is a terrible tragedy for Pádraic’s immediate and extended family, his wide circle of friends and the whole community in Rathmines.

“We are all deeply saddened by his sudden and untimely death. The entire school community sends its deepest condolences to Pádraic’s family and friends.

“We spoke to all the children this morning and allowed them to share and process their grief.”
