Cycling Ireland has announced that Cycleways CC will host the National Hill Climb Championships, with the title race to be held in Co Wicklow on October 6th.

Some weeks ago the association sought expressions of interest from clubs who wanted to host the event. After considering a number of proposals, Cycleways CC has been asked to host the race at their proposed location of Turlough Hill, which is ascended from Glendalough.

Described by Cycling Ireland as “long, but not overly hard”, the course is 10km in length with a gradient of 5.2 per cent.

The first segment has been used in the Rás and is also climbed during the Wicklow 200, one of the oldest and most popular sportives in the country run by the IVCA.

In a departure from last year, the race is being held on a weekend – with the event date falling on a Saturday. A morning start time is proposed.

Both Cycling Ireland and Cycleways CC say it involves between 23-26 minutes of racing for the fastest riders, depending on weather conditions.

The late date will certainly suit those who have prolonged their season abroad.

Ryan Sherlock of the promoting club is currently riding well in Belgium having finished 2nd in a race there yesterday, Monday.

However, the reigning champion Mark Dowling (DID Dunboyne) has been in absolutely flying form in France in recent weeks and will take a lot of beating.

We’ll have entry details and the exact start time when we get it. In the meantime here’s a Strava file of the course - http://app.strava.com/segments/846761 - (so you can have a prolonged worry at your leisure!).
