Large drop in numbers but Mondello Series set to kick off for 2022

The Mondello Series has seen numbers almost halve for its first event of 2022 compared to last year, but there are still more than 70 riders entered and the show goes on.

Promoters, Irish Road Club, have decades of experience running races in Ireland and have seen the cyclical nature of race numbers down the years. The current drop in racing numbers - though Cycling Ireland membership has increased - is not new in the longer term and may prove to be a Covid-19 hangover.

Numbers for the opening round of the 2022 series - tomorrow night in Mondello Park, Co Kildare - are down by 47 per cent on last year, though the win won't be any easier to achieve.

While some races have been cancelled for lack of numbers this year, the vast majority of events have gone ahead. And though the Mondello Series has been impacted by the trend of lower racing numbers, the news is not all bad in Irish cycling, The upcoming Newry Three Day, for example, has sold out, with extra riders on a reserve list.

Best of luck to all the riders competing tomorrow evening in Mondello.
