Lance Armstrong has urged pro cyclists to seize the
moment of racing being stopped due to Covid19 to take power in the sport.
He has long said that if cyclists unified and fought for
more money for all riders they could have a much stronger position in the sport
because the races could not go ahead without them.
He made his latest remarks as many pro teams, including
some in the WorldTour, have reduced their riders’ salaries by up to 70 per cent
in some cases due to racing being suspended.
On smaller teams in Belgium, for example, riders are now
on welfare payments from the state as their teams are not paying them.
Armstrong, serving a lifetime ban for doping, believes because the riders make the sport, they need to use this moment to ensure they get their fair share of revenue from races.
“To all you cyclists that are out there - sitting at home and not sure if you’re going to get your pay cheque next month, not sure if you’re team is going to survive this; now is the opportunity.
“Now is the opportunity for you to re-set the scales, to
get a seat at the table, to take the power back.
“If you don’t take this opportunity right now you may
never have another chance to do it. So think about that,” he added.
“Talk to each other… the peloton as a whole, and unify. Take this opportunity to take the power back. You are the actors in the play; without the actors the play doesn’t go on.”
