Lack of Garda resources means 'Shay Elliott' dropped from National Road Series

The Cycling Ireland National Road Series has been reduced to four rounds as the Shay Elliott Memorial has been taken out of the series.

Bray Wheelers, which promotes the race, has been unable
to source enough Garda resources to be able to run a separate women’s race on
the day next month.

That means it cannot run the separate women’s race and so the Shay Elliott cannot be part of the National Road Series.

Cycling Ireland stipulates that races must hold a standalone women’s race as part of their promotion in order for their event to be included in the series.

”The difficult decision was due to An Garda Síochána not able to support the races on the day, which has resulted in Bray Wheelers not being in a position to facilitate a third women’s only race at the Shay Elliott Memorial,” Cycling Ireland said.

“Racing will continue at the Shay Elliott Memorial on
19th September, however, due to the absence of a women’s only race, it can no
longer form part of the National Road Series.”

That’s very unfortunate news as the series was shorter than
usual anyway due to the impact the pandemic had on the road season earlier this
year.

It means the next race in the series will be the final event; the Des Hanlon Memorial, promoted by Carlow RCC on September 26th. Double points will be on offer at that final round.
