Labour Party's tribute to young member killed in cycling crash with Luas

Cormac Ó Braonáin, the Chair of Labour Youth, who was sadly killed 12 months ago in a crash with a Luas tram while he was cycling in Dublin's south inner city

The Labour Party has gathered virtually to pay tribute to one of its leading young members, Cormac Ó Braonáin, who was killed this time last year when involved in a crash with a Luas tram in Dublin's south inner city.

The 19-year-old, who was chair of Labour Youth, was killed at Peter’s Place near Charlemont Bridge when he crashed with a late night Luas traveling between the Harcourt and Charlemont stops and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ivana Bacik said Mr Ó Braonáin had made in “immense”
contribution to the Labour Party, including his role in Labour Youth, managing
local election campaigns and also working tirelessly on the Repeal the 8th referendum
campaign and in the re-election campaign of President Michael D Higgins.

Mr Ó Braonáin’s parents, grandmother and sister joined
the online event and listen to tributes paid to him, led by members of the
Labour Dublin Bay South constituency.

President Higgins joined the tributes, saying Mr Ó
Braonáin have “lived his life filled with meaning, kindness and solidarity”.

“Although his life was short, its imprint was deep and
his legacy is one that his loving family and many friends can be very proud of.”

President Higgins said Mr Ó Braonáin had “raised his voice against prejudice and discrimination in our society” and had become involved in politics to fight for “a better world”.

Labour Party leader Alan Kelly TD said it was “an
incredible emotion moment” as the members of the party who knew Mr Ó Braonáin gathered
virtually, due to Covid-19, to remember and pay tribute to their deceased
friend.

He said he had first met him at Leinster House and “the
energy that was abounding off him was incredible, it was infectious”.

“It was obvious he was very motivated and very driven and wanted to achieve so much, and he was going to achieve so much,” he said, adding he was "a fantastic person to the core".
