Video: Dehydrated koala stops cyclists for water as Aussie fires burn

The koala approached the cyclists, climbed onto one of their bikes and drank the water offered as temperatures soared and bush fires raged in Australia

A koala has become an online star in Australia after approaching a group of cyclists out training in search of water as temperatures soared and bush fires raged.

The cyclists took video footage (below) and photos of the amazing encountered which are now circulating online in Australia and spreading further afield.

The incident took
place in South Australian as
cyclist Anna Heusler was riding near Adelaide as temperatures were around 40 degrees.

"Despite seeing koalas all the time while cycling, this one approached me immediately and climbed up on my bike for a drink from my water bottle," she said.

"I stopped on my bike and he walked right up to me, quite quickly for a koala, and as I was giving him a drink from all our water bottles.

"He actually climbed up onto my bike. None of us have ever seen anything like it.

was an amazing experience that is still bringing a smile to my face."

"There were about a dozen cyclists around me
watching this, all men, and several commented that it was genuinely the best
thing they've witnessed.

"We are in the midst of a heat wave and the countryside is burning out of control with bush fires for several days now; devastating losses of homes and wildlife."
