Glenn Kinning (East Antrim Audi) has taken the first stage of the “Spin11 Portaferry Three Day” after the winning breakaway almost lapped the field on the Kirkistown Motor Racing Circuit in Co Down last night, Friday.
The small field of 40 riders put up a very aggressive contest for the duration of the 30 mile race, with larger than expect gaps emerging during the short opener to the Three-Day.
Winner Kinning got the better of the Eurocycles duo of Thomas Martin and Fraser Duncan at the finish, with the sprint for stage honours opening up just behind the tail end of what was left of the almost-lapped peloton.
Kinning’s East Antrim Audi team mate Gary Cranston was also right in the hunt for the stage win as was John Heverin of Clann Eireann, with both riders 4th and 5th respectively.
While beaten into third place at the finish, strongman Fraser Duncan had a great race and took all three of the intermediate sprints. Those primes and his third place on the finish line gave him enough points to take the points competition lead into today’s action.
With time bonuses, Kinning has a two second lead on GC from Thomas Martin, with Duncan a further two seconds back.
The riders face a 53 mile road stage today followed by a two-mile TT. The race then concludes on Sunday with a 43-mile road stage. There will be time bonuses on the line on today’s and tomorrow’s road stages so the gallops may prove vital in deciding who takes the overall win.
The race is backed for the first time by Philip Cassidy’s Spin11 cycling kit and clothing company.
