Kevin McCambridge notes lessons learned from Euro Champs debut

Kevin McCambridge has said he thoroughly enjoyed his
major championships debut for Ireland at the Europeans in Wednesday’s junior TT.

The Irish teenager, who finished a very solid 17th in the
22.4km TT in Alkmaar in the Netherlands, added he took valuable lessons from
the outing.

“The course wasn’t that well suited to me as there was
not a drag in sight,” he said of the flat parcours.

It featured exposed roads and was more suited to powerful
riders rather than the lighter juniors in the field.

“In the recon the day before it was a head wind home and
I thought it would be the same but I learned a big lesson,” he said in
reference to his race effort.

He said he went with the wrong wheel choice, opting for
85mls which were hard to control in the crosswinds and caused difficulty in
trying to put the power down.

“I was super nervous getting warmed up and waiting on my
start. The crowds were amazing. The Irish team did a great job at getting me
ready,” he said.

“It was a really good experience and I really hope to go
to the Worlds as it is the main goal of the season.”

He was 1:30 down on the winner and exactly 30 seconds off
the top 10; a more than decent ride in his debut at this level.

The title was won by Italian national champion Andrea
Piccolo, recording a time of 26:52 for a blistering 50km per hour average.
