Rein Taaramae can count himself extremely lucky after he was hit by a rival team car from behind at the Vuelta. A double fork snap suggests a very significant impact and as you can see, the damage to the Giro d'Italia stage winner's bike was quite something.
Estonian rider Rein Taaramae had a very lucky escape on stage 7 of the Vuelta A Espana yesterday when he was hit from behind by a team car while trying to regain contact with the main field.
The Katusha man, who has been having a fine season, was dropped on a climb but fought his way back into the cavalcade in the hope of getting back on.
But all hopes of that disappeared in an instant when the Cofidis team car collided with him and sent him crashing to the floor.
His Canyon bike, luckily, came off much worse than he did and was smashed into several pieces.
Taaramae suffered cuts and bruises and abandoned there and then, though his team issued a statement saying it accepted the incident was an accident.
“I can’t be sure exactly what happened. I was suffering today,” said Taaramae. “I was dropped in the group and was riding alone.
“In one moment I found myself on the side of the road and I understood that a car hit me from the back.
“I think I’m lucky that nothing is broken. My bike was broken in probably six pieces.
“When I saw that, I realised I was really lucky. Later that director spoke to me and said it was his fault but was unsure what had happened too. He was very sorry.”
