Irish cycling’s golden girls make history being honoured in China

Held to honour the achievements of the top riders in the sport globally, the women were the first Irish cyclist’s honoured at the event.

World beaters Katie George Dunlevy and her sighted tandem pilot Eve McCrystal have made another piece of history; this time in China.

The Paralympian gold medal winners and world champions were honoured at the UCI’s end of season gala event Guilin, China.

Held to honour the achievements of the top riders in the sport globally, the women were the first Irish cyclist’s honoured at the event.

McCrystal was unable to attend, though Dunlevy was on to collect their richly deserved reward after an incredible couple of years.

They were presented with the award for winning both the paracycling TT and road race world championships this year.

However, they really sprang to national prominence last year when they emerged to win TT gold and road race silver in Rio.

After their world title-winning ride in the TT  at the Worlds last month they popped up days later to also claim the road race.

They claimed victory in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, in the WB Tandem category. The race yesterday came down to a bunch sprint.
