Kanturk Cycling Club, based in Co Cork and sponsored by O’Leary Stone, has been nominated for a prestigious National Lottery Good Causes Award.
The Irish cycling club is one of only six nominees in the 'sports category' drawn from clubs across the country.
Kanturk Cycling Club was established in 1997 and in the time since then the club’s name has been a byword for youth participation and development in Irish cycling. It’s most famous former rider is Eddie Dunbar, now riding for Ineos Grenadiers in pro cycling’s top tier.
The club has over
60 members and also has a velodrome, on which its riders can race and train
safely.
Lottery funding has proved essential for the maintenance of the 250-metre outdoor track and has also allowed facilities to be upgraded to the necessary standard required for national and international competitions.

Aside from ‘sport’,
the other National Lottery Good Causes Awards categories are health & wellbeing, heritage, arts & culture,
community and youth.
The shortlist for
the sports award includes:
- Shankill Tennis Club, Dublin
- South Dublin Taekwondo, Dublin
- Raphoe Community Sports Development, Donegal
- Kanturk Cycling Club, Cork
- Ratoath Athletics Club, Meath
- Ballintubber GAA, Mayo
The awards aim to “honour the inspiring work and achievements of thousands of projects, clubs and individuals from all over Ireland” who have had an impact on their local communities, with the assistance of lottery funding.
Aside from
getting national recognition, the nominees are also in with a chance of winning
a significant sum of money as each category winner will receive €10,000 and the
overall Good Cause of the Year winner will net an additional €25,000.
The winners in
all six categories, and the overall winner, will be announced at the Mansion
House, Dublin, on Saturday, May 29th – Covid-19 restrictions allowing.
Well done to everyone at O’Leary Stone Kanturk CC and stickybottle wishes you the very best of luck at the final in May.
