Team Stena Line Ireland’s Ryan Mullen may have gotten his 2012 Junior Tour of Ireland off to a dream start in Castlebar when taking the opening TT yesterday, but on the road to Westport today, Wednesday, the rising star had the day from hell.
He now finds himself well down the general classification after being penalised by a massive five minutes for a series of infringements including jersey pulling and drafting behind a vehicle.
The 17-year-old suffered a puncture and also crashed in the second half of the stage. Though he got back on, there were concerns about the manner in which that chase was conducted.
On the cat 1 climb of Maam Trasna the bunch split to pieces, with a small number of riders going clear there and maintaining their lead to the finish.

Colin Joyce of the visiting Hot Tubes team took the stage win from Marcus Smith (Team Specialized) and Jacob Ragan (Maxgear), with Ryan Gibbons (Mr Price South Africa) taking fourth some 49 seconds down and then the main bunch just three seconds behind him.
The best of the Irish was Danny Bruton; the DID Dunboyne man riding for a Cycling Leinster selection finishing seventh on the stage. It was a 72.8 mile run on some very lumpy roads with a Westport start and finish.
Ragan’s third on the stage was enough to give him the yellow jersey, with Cormac Clarke best of the Irish on GC in sixth place and nicely poised just 49 seconds down.
