Talented Irish junior international, Thomas Fallon (Seven Springs) underlined his growing reputation with a brilliant win on the opening stage of today’s Charleville Park Two-Day.
Fallon, who has been named as a reserve rider for the Irish team for the World Championships in Holland later this month, out-sprinted Wills Wheels Cork County rider Bryan Long at the end of a lumpy 80 kilometre stage.
The eventual stage winner was aggressive all day and was in the most threatening-looking moves. When a 12-man group surged off the front with around 20 kilometres remaining he was in that too and they stayed away to the end, coming in some 37 seconds ahead of the bunch.

The really good news for Fallon was that several of the pre-race favourites, who are good testers, missed the move and will have it all to do in tomorrow morning’s 6.4 kilometre time-trial.
Bryan Long missed out by a whisker on what would have been his first win of the year. However, he can take some consolation in having beaten National Junior Champion Liam Corcoran (Castlebar CC) into third.
Crucially, because there are time bonuses Fallon holds a four second advantage at the top of the GC ahead of Long with Corcoran at six seconds, while those in the bunch today are a total of 47 seconds back.
The opening stage of the two-day, which is the last stage race on the cycling calendar for 2012, was as expected a very lively affair today with several groups breaking off the front from the drop of the flag.
Indeed, Fallon was one of the first to put any decent amount of time into the bunch when he broke clear with another rider after just five kilometres. But they never managed to gain more than 20 seconds on the peloton.
Ryan O’Donovan (Cork County CC) and Laurent Dumoulin (O’Leary’s Stone, Kanturk) were next to try their luck and they succeeded in stretching a lead out to 30 seconds at one stage but that move was doomed too, and brought back inside the 25 kilometre mark.
Following that came a flurry of further attacks, with Blarney being a constant presence in the moves. But by the halfway stage of the Kanturk CC promoted event it was still all together.
The racing was quick and several riders struggled on the climbs and sharp technical descents. It was following one of those descents that the decisive move of the day went clear.
The road kicked up and was perfect for an attack with the bunch lined out. With 20 kilometres to go and a tailwind home, the day’s decisive break forged clear and quickly opened out a 20 second gap.

Working together, and with 12 different teams represented, they powered on well and quickly bumped up the margin to 30 seconds as the bunch behind switched off.
That stall paved the way for a four-man group to go in pursuit of those out front, with Limerick’s Brian Hart and Cork County CC’s Ryan O’Donovan amongst that quartet.
They were caught by the bunch within sight of the line and Comeragh CC’s Barry Griffen took the sprint for 13th.
In the A4 race, O’Leary’s Stone Kanturk CC rider Barry Meade won from a group of 19 riders that came in over a minute ahead of a chasing sextet with the main peloton coming in over two minutes back.
Meade edged out Slaney CC’s David O’Connell and Naas rider Hugh Gallagher.
