Sam Oomen is lucky to be able to continue at the Giro after the Jumbo Visma rider suffered a freak fall after the end of stage 5 today into Messina.
While Oomen's team mate Pascal Eenkhoorn created the moment of the race at last year's Tour of Britain when he passed a bottle to a young kid riding beside the breakaway, today's Giro fan was a lot more clumsy.
Oomen reached out to pass the man one of his bottles as a souvenir as he rode across the pavement towards the team bus after a long day in the saddle today. However, as the bottle was being handed over, the man leaned forward, swinging a musette he was carrying into Oomen's handlebars.
It sent the Dutch climber crashing to the ground, with the man who had caused the crash clearly disgusted with himself for creating the mishap.
However, the good news is that Jumbo Visma has reported Oomen has been medically checked and he does not appear to have suffered any major consequences over the nasty freak incident.
