Jumbo Visma has locked in its Tour de France champion, Jonas Vingegaard, for the remainder of his peak years with a new contract. The Dane will now be staying with the Dutch team until the end of 2027, when he will be 31-years-old.
The new contract - which is a three-year extension to Vingegaard's existing deal - not only ensures he remains with the team but also rules out any possibility he could be lured away by Ineos Grenadiers, which has struggled to find a big Grand Tour contender since Chris Froome left and Egan Bernal fell victim to injuries and a life-threatening crash.
The British team has already made a number of efforts to sign Remco Evenepoel from Soudal-QuickStep and has the money to beat offers from any other teams. However, it has not been as successful at quickly spotting and signing the emerging superpowers in the sport in recent years.
With Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) also signed up to a contact until the end of 2027 and Evenepoel set to remain with Soudal-Quick Step until at least the end of 2026, it means the big three general classification men in pro cycling at present will not be on the transfer market any time soon.
Vingegaard signed for Jumbo Visma in the winter of 2018 after two seasons with Danish Continental outfit, Team ColoQuick. He won one race - a stage at Tour de Pologne - in his first season at World Tour level. He didn't win again until the start of the 2021 season, when he claimed a stage at UAE Tour, before going on to finish 2nd in the Tour de France that year and winning that race last year.
“I have had a fantastic journey with the team who has supported me in every way to become the rider I am today," Vingegaard said when the new deal was officially announced by Jumbo Visma, adding he aimed for "many more" wins on the bike, including at the Tour de France.
"I appreciate the quality of the team and the people here and feel at home. Every day we push each other to get better, and this is where I can fulfill my full potential. We will definitely reach an even higher level together. I'm excited to continue growing within the team.”
Richard Plugge, general manager of Jumbo-Visma, said the team had confidence in Vingegaard, describing him as "a fantastic fit for us".
"He is eager to learn and easy to coach, and also pushes us ahead as a team. He was a rough diamond when he first came to the team. Together, we developed significantly, ultimately winning the Tour de France. Jonas is essential to our goals if we're to maintain our position at the top.”
