Judge tells driver who hit cyclist he’d now have to cycle to work

A cyclist helped gardai trace the motorist who hit her and knocked off her bike before leaving.

A motorist who hit a cyclist and knocked her off her bike before driving off has been banned from driving and given an €800 fined.

After banning the accused man from driving for a year Judge Hugh O’Donnell told Dublin District Court: “He will be cycling now”.

Chef Barry McDonagh (33), Glendoher Close, Ballyboden, Dublin, pleaded guilty to careless driving, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and not giving appropriate information when the incident occurred in March of last year.

The court was told the female cyclists was riding her bike on South Richmond St, Dublin, on March 28th when McDonagh collided with her.

However, the cyclist noted his registration and passed it to the Garda. And when McDonagh was traced he admitted what had happened.

His solicitor said McDonagh had tipped the cyclist as he passed her, adding there was no bus lane on the street.

The court was told it was McDonagh’s first offence, that he had made admissions were gardai contacted him and that he had never come to the attention of the Garda before.

Judge Hugh O’Donnell was told McDonagh worked as a chef in Dublin 4 and needed his car.

However, Judge O’Donnell said he could not expect to escape a ban and suspended his licence for 12 months, saying he would be cycling to work now.
