Jonas Vingegaard gets incredible homecoming in Denmark | Videos

Jonas Vingegaard has clearly made a huge impression on the people of Denmark, considering the sheer scale of this homecoming event

Jonas Vingegaard carved his name into cycling's history on Sunday when he won the Tour de France and became a Danish legend over the course of the three week race. His impact on the Danish people was clear to see today when he received a massive homecoming in Copenhagen three days after his victory into Paris.

The Jumbo Visa Tour winner was greeted in the streets by huge crowds and when he took to the balcony of the capital's town hall to address those who had gathered, the TV images showed of sea of people had turned up to celebrate his triumph.

His Tour win comes 26 years after the only other Danish rider claimed victory in the Tour, Bjarne Riis, who later admitted to doping through his career.

Two Danish Air Force F-16s escorted the private plane that brought Vingegaard and his family back to Denmark, just over three weeks after the 2022 Tour started there with three stages, during which the crowds packed the roadsides.

"It's fantastic and mega-moving... I still haven't realised that I won the Tour de France," Vingegaard said. "It's something I couldn't have imagined, it's unbelievable."
