Former pro road racer turned endurance rider Joe Barr is back in the saddle down the west coast of Ireland today, with a new attempt to break the Wild Atlantic Way record.
Barr (62) began his race against the clock in Muff, Co Donegal, this morning and his ride will take him around the north west before heading down the west coast all the way to Kinsale in Co Cork.
The full route is 2,343km, with 23,231 metres of climbing along the way; a very challenging race and one that he tried earlier this year, but abandoned when he did not feel he was on course for a good ride.
However, Barr said after that attempt that abandoning the record attempt was not a failure. Instead, it became a lessons learned exercise as he had gotten to know huge sections of the course and familiarised with the nature of the challenge.
He promised at that time, back in May, that he'd go over his data and review all of the nuggets of information and know-how he could take from his first attempt and use those when he aimed for the record again.
Barr has been true to his word and he and his support team have been working in recent months towards today to get their second assault on the record underway.
