Moore: “It’s been a long time coming so it was nice to come in solo”

Darnell Moore will head to the Suir Valley 3-Day this weekend as a ‘one to watch’ courtesy of his very fine solo win in the Brendan Campbell memorial in Donore yesterday.

The Caldwell Cycles, Omagh rider had around 30 seconds to spare on runner-up Matteo Cigala (Aquablue) in yesterday’s feature event, an achievement made all the more impressive by virtue of the fact he started with the scratch group.

They were a hefty two minutes behind the A3 and junior group and had to work extremely hard over the 6.4-kilometre lap to get back on level terms.

Moore managed to bridge across around the midway point with half a dozen others but when they did they learned of a lone leader up ahead.

The teenager didn’t wait around and with the help of a select few more he stormed off in pursuit of the lone leader and caught him on the final lap, with Mark Dowling (ASEA-Wheelworx) and Des Woods (Newry Wheelers) now stalking them from behind.

Moore took flight on his own and went solo with less than five kilometres to go with Matteo Cigala winning the reduced bunch sprint for second.

It was Moore’s second win of the season and followed his victory in the Derry city crit earlier this year, not to mind his fabulous county rider prize from the An Post Rás on stage six.

“The win has been a long time coming to it was good to come in solo,” he said.

“It was a tough circuit with very little recovery and it suited me I think.”

At the Suir Valley 3-Day he will make his debut and believes with his brother Calvin as well as Craig McAuley they can do some damage.

“We've a small but strong line-up for it, hopefully we’ll get stuck into a bit of the action and between the three of us we should be able to get something out of it.”

After this weekend he'll head to the national crit champs and finish out the season at home.”
