Italian rider Damiano Cunego with his left knee bandaged at stage start in Poland, but check out (below) the photo of the wound he shared on Twitter, which has since gone viral, Ouch! (Photo: Stefano Sirotti)
Two facts can be drawn from the photo below of Damiano Cunego's battered knee; they clearly make them tough in Italy and whoever stitched up his wound needs to turn the lights on once in a while when they work.
The 32-year-old former Giro d'Italia winner was among a number of riders to crash very heavily on Sunday's opening stage at the Tour of Poland.
Gale force winds and driving rain and hailstones pounded the riders, downed trees and blew debris across the roads, leading to plenty of spills.
Cunego's fall sliced open his left knee, but he remounted and finished the stage; and on the same time as the bunch sprint winner too.
He later underwent a stitching job, which looks pretty crude or perhaps is distorted by swelling. And the Lampre-Merida rider has since finished stage 2 and 3 in the bunch, and looks determined to continue.
He shared this photo of his injury via his Twitter account accompanied by just two words; brutta ferita. We believe it means "bad wound"; a master of understatement is our Damiano.
Ireland’s Philip Deignan (Team Sky) has also finished the first three stages in the bunch and should show himself on the climbs in coming days.
