Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) faces possible further punishment from the UCI for the stamping incident that resulted in his disqualification from Exact Cross in Belgium last week.
The Belgian national champion tangled, and the crashed, with his former team mate Ryan Kamp (Alpecin-Deceuninck Development Team). As Iserbyt got back on his feet he walked on Kamp's bike and then stamped on it.
The incident render Kamp's back unrideable and he could be seen remonstrating with Iserbyt after the incident, all of which was caught by the TV cameras. Iserbyt was taken out of the race by the officials and also fined 100 Swiss francs, €106 Euro.
A report on the incident was submitted to the UCI by the commissaires and it was being studied by the UCI's legal department, raising the prospect of further sanction. For his part, Iserbyt issued a general apology on Twitter, though he did not apologise to Kamp directly, or even reference him.
At the Gala of the Crystal Bicycle, an awards ceremony in Belgium to honour the top cyclists at the end of the road season, Iserbyt, once again said his behaviour was no befitting a Belgian national champion. He also revealed the incident was part of a longer running dispute with Kamp.
“That reaction was not necessary,” Iserbyt said. “It happened in the heat of the battle. There was something simmering between us since last season. He cut off at places where it was not necessary or where it simply could not be done."
Isberyt also claimed Kamp said something to him and that caused him to react the way he did, though he did not reveal what those remarks were. He also claimed he hit his chin in the fall which left him "shocked", none of which is likely to lessen any possible future sanction.
"But anyway, my reaction was not good," added Iserbyt. "That kick came after a verbal reaction from Kamp. He did not have to push me to the side either. But I do realise that I made a mistake. It just happened.
"There have been unresolved issues for a while—like cutting in places where it shouldn’t happen and pushing. Since Ryan left the team, tensions have escalated.”
