Martyn Irvine has put in a mixed day on the London Olympic velodrome; posting two good rides in the opening rounds of the omnium but perhaps coming up a little short in the third race on the first day of competition yesterday, Saturday.

The Irishman finished exactly midway – ninth of an eighteen-man field - in the 250 metre flying lap, the opening round of his six-race omnium event.

In the second event, the 30km points race, Irvine showed the skills and power that have made him a truly world class rider at this event over the past couple of years. He was one of a small number of riders to lap the field and ended that race in sixth place.

Combined with his ride in the opening round, that left him in seventh place overall; on 15 points and just four points off the bronze medal position.

However, he appeared to be living dangerously right from the early exchanges in the round three elimination race; where the last rider across the line every second lap must pull out.

He seemed to be riding within himself – albeit towards the back of the field – and well able to surge just enough when it mattered to remain in the race.

However, that approach saw him undone much earlier than he would have expected, being the fourth rider of the group to be forced out; a result far below his capabilities and one that saw him drop to 10th overall at the midway point.

With three races remaining on day two today, Sunday – the 4km individual pursuit, the 15km scratch race and the 1km TT – Irvine will be looking for more if he is not to finish his Games with a result that undervalues his genuine higher standing on the biggest of stages.
