Ronan McLaughlin is today officially the new Everesting world record holder, having knocked Alberto Contador off the top spot with his ride on Mamore Gap, Co Donegal, yesterday.
Stickybottle broke the news late last night that McLaughlin had done it, but we reported the time was provisional and still had to be ratified by Hells 500, which created the Everesting concept and keeps the official records.
However, McLaughlin and his team submitted all of the details of the ride to Hells 500 last night and the Australian group has ratified the achievement.
While McLaughlin told stickybottle last night his provisional time was 7 hours 18 minutes, his ratified time is actually slightly faster, at 7 hours 4 minutes.
He climbed 8,848 metres, the precise elevation required for a ride to count as an Everesting, and did it during a 155km ride on a section of Mamore Gap at 14.2 per cent gradient.
With his time now ratified, the 33-year-old Irish cyclist holds the record from seven-time Grand Tour winner Contador by 23 minutes.
WorldTour professional rider Lachlan Morton (EF Pro Cycling) is next on the all-time list with a time of 7 hours 29 minutes, some 25 minutes off the pace of McLaughlin.
Yesterday's effort by McLaughlin was his second Everesting ride, both of which have taken place on Mamore Gap. His first ride was on July 12th when he shattered the Irish record and set the 5th fastest time of all time, with 8 hours 9 minutes.
Yesterday's second effort now means McLaughlin is the world record holder, an astonishing achievement for a rider who works full time and had to beat Contador to get to the top. He also has the 6th fastest time of all time.
As well as targeting the fastest time possible, the Donegal man was also fundraising for the Community Rescue Service and you can donate by following this link.
