Cycling Ireland’s Zwift racing is back for winter and will be live-streamed on the federation’s Facebook account with commentary from Eurosport commentator Declan Quigley.
The Zwift racing
promoted by the national governing body was one of the hits of the Covid-19 lock-down,
with huge numbers of riders signing up.
At the time there
were no sporting events in the Republic and the Zwift racing prompted a
significant amount of media coverage of Cycling Ireland’s efforts to keep
riders active and competing against each other from home.
This time around
the Cycling Ireland Zwift League is back in a time of lock-down, but even if
the current period of lock-down in the Republic is lifted as planned at the
start of December, the league will continue beyond that date.
The first of
eight rounds of the league is set for this weekend – Saturday – and the 2020-21
league features a mix of scratch and points races, aimed at mixing up the
nature of the racing.
Round 1 starts
with a 24km scratch race on the France RGV course (designed to ease riders into
the effort), with Round 2 stepping
it up a level with a 27.3km cobbled classic featuring two King of the Mountains
primes before the sprint for the line,
where double points will be on
offer.
“A new
category has been added to the league with A’s and A+ separated in the standings,” Cycling Ireland said in announcing the
details of the new league.
“A and A+
will start together at 10am followed by B, C and D category riders at
one-minute intervals.
“The top
50 male and female riders in each category will be awarded points from the
round and your best 7 results will count in the overall standings.”
Members holding a 2020 or 2021 membership will feature in
the male and female league standings and will battle for the Spin11 Champions
Jersey. League standings will factor into qualification for any eRacing
National Championships should they take place in 2021.
