Fintan Ryan will be out of action for an indefinite period after breaking his collar bone last weekend.
The Irish international and former national junior road race champion came down in a crash during the opening night of the 4 Days of Geneva and suffered the injury.
Ryan was competing in the elimination race when the spill happened and his race was ended immediately.
Irish teammates Marc Potts, Felix English and Mark Downey finished the race and were lucky to avoid the incident.
The good news is Ryan didn’t dislocate the shoulder joint – as sometimes happens.
He will have an appointment next week in Dublin to determine the severity of the break - and the expected recovery period.
However, it's undoubtedly a big blow to him as he had been building some good form this season.
So far he has ridden UCI-ranked events in Barcelona, the Aigle 3-Day, the Revolution Series in the UK, the Europeans and last weekend’s ill-fated Geneva 4-Day.
