Just one cycling club was awarded a sports capital grant in the latest round of Government funding totaling some €37 million.
Combined 994 sports clubs and projects
around Irish were award varying sums that came to a total of €37 million.
While the money was awarded under the
2018 round of the Sports Capital Programme (SCP), the recipients have only just
been announced.
The clubs and projects who received the
grants applied last year, with the money awarded now after all applications
were considered.
The one cycling group to receive money
was the Ratoath BMX Club in Co Meath; a fantastic amenity used by BMX riders
from all over the country.
It received €17,242 towards a redesign
of the BMX track. While that money was well deserved for a project put in place
and managed by volunteers, it was disappointing other cycling clubs and groups
did not receive any funding.
As expected, GAA clubs around the country dominated the list of 994 recipient clubs and projects published by the Department of Sport, which features 37 sports.
“The grants we are announcing will
significantly improve sports facilities right across the country,” said Minister
for Sport Shane Ross TD (Ind).
“The vast majority of grants are going
to voluntary organisations and I want to particularly thank all of the
volunteers associated with these clubs for their tireless work and their
commitment to improving their facilities to benefit all members.”
Minister for State Brendan Griffin said:
“While it was not possible to fund all applications received, the assessment
process was designed to prioritise projects that shared facilities, that came
from disadvantaged areas and did not receive substantial funding under the
programme previously.
“In terms of the successful projects,
the grants announced today benefit every county but there is also a huge spread
of sports with 37 different sports receiving funding.”
