A Dublin schoolgirl's homework has offered brilliant insight into the impact Ireland's best cyclists have had on her. Clearly a massive welcome was rolled out for Katie Turner (11) at Rás na mBan and it has left a lasting impression.
When she was asked, in a homework task, to write about a time in her life that made her feel different, she described her trip to the race.
“When I went to the Rás na mBan, the Irish team welcomed
me,” she writes of Fiona Mangan, Alice Sharpe, Imogen Cotter, Mia Griffin and
Kelly Murphy.
“I got a photo with them and the next day they said hi to
me. I got to wave the flag at the start of the last stage.
“After that they gave out hats and I was the first one to get one. That made me feel special. I will always remember that day.”
From Clonskeagh in south Dublin, Katie attends Mount Anville Montessori Junior School and is a member of Orwell Wheelers, along with her dad, brother and sister.
She has been attending the Orwell youth training sessions at Corkagh Park and during the pandemic she got into Zwift and then developed an interest in racing. Katie entered her first open road race in June and has also been keeping a close eye on pro events on TV.
On her trip with her dad, John, to see Rás na mBan in Kilkenny they rode out to the TT stage and the Irish team overtook them. So father and daughter followed them to the start.
Katie got to speak to the team; asking questions and getting her photo taken with them before meeting the riders again later that evening. She then rounded off her trip to the race by waving the flag at the start of the final stage; as you do.
