Irish national teams are being selected again after a long break in international duty for all but a handful of WorldTour pros and carded riders.
Because the pandemic struck the domestic
scene so badly last year, and a large number of events were cancelled, there
were no national junior or U23 teams selected for road race action at home.
The World Road Championships featured no
junior or U23 races and while the European Road Championships did feature
events for both categories, Irish teams were not sent due to Covid-19
regulations.
However, in a really positive sign
things are returning to normal, Cycling Ireland has confirmed junior and U23
riders will be selected to represent their country at the next round of the
National Road Series.
The teams will contest the Newcastle
West Four Day stage race, which takes place from July 30th to August
2nd. Cycling Ireland is joining forces with its road commission to
send the teams to the junior men’s and senior men’s races.
The teams have not yet been picked and
Cycling Ireland said national junior team manager, Martin O’Loughlin, and Irish
U23 manager, Ronan McLaughlin, will pick the line-ups.
“Riders for the five-man teams will be
selected based on a criteria including, but not limited to, performances in
races this season, development potential, ability to follow a strategy/plan,
suitability to the course,” Cycling Ireland said in a statement.
It added the two teams would be based
together for the weekend event in a bid to “further strengthen the cycling
pathway from junior to U23” and there would also be one place on the U23 team
for an elite rider.
